There are many ways to introduce Malta to children. Some begin with beaches, others with castles, boats or ice cream in a village square. Popeye Village offers something stranger and more theatrical: a tumble of crooked wooden houses leaning over Anchor Bay, painted in storybook colours and still carrying the odd afterlife of a Hollywood film set.
The village was built for Robert Altman’s 1980 musical Popeye, starring Robin Williams. When filming ended, the set did not disappear. Instead, Malta kept it, softened it, added family entertainment around it, and turned Sweethaven into one of the island’s most unusual attractions.
Its charm is immediate. The buildings look as though they have been assembled by a cheerful carpenter with no interest in straight lines. Roofs tilt, balconies sag, facades sit at improbable angles, and the whole place appears to have slid out of a comic strip and landed beside one of Malta’s bluest bays. For photographers, it is almost too easy. The colour against the water does much of the work.
For families, the question is not whether Popeye Village is interesting. It is whether it suits your children. Younger visitors are usually the best audience. They respond to the colour, the characters, the small-scale shows, the playful buildings and the feeling of walking through a place that does not behave like an ordinary town. Current visitor information from the attraction highlights the original film set, animation shows, a comic museum, cinema documentary, scavenger hunt and family activities, with seasonal water fun in warmer months.
Older children and teenagers may read the place differently. To them, Popeye Village can feel small, eccentric and slightly dated. That is not necessarily a flaw, but it is worth understanding before you go. This is not a major theme park in the international sense. It is a Maltese curiosity with a cinematic backstory, a beautiful bay and a clear appeal for younger families.
The best way to enjoy it is to set the expectation properly. Do not sell it as the highlight of an entire Malta holiday. Treat it as a colourful northern detour, especially if you are already planning time around Mellieħa, Golden Bay or the island’s northwest coast. Arrive earlier in the day during summer, when the light is cleaner, the heat is easier and the village has not yet filled with peak-hour visitors.
Anchor Bay itself is part of the experience. Even if the children are more interested in characters than cinema history, adults can enjoy the setting: limestone slopes, bright water, timber facades and the faint absurdity of a 1980 film fantasy still standing in the Mediterranean sun. On warm days, the bay adds value to the visit, especially when paired with beach time nearby.
So is Popeye Village worth visiting? For families with young children, yes, particularly if you frame it as playful and visual rather than polished and grand. For adults travelling without children, it is best approached as charming kitsch with a spectacular backdrop. For photographers, it remains one of Malta’s most instantly recognisable compositions.
Popeye Village works because it does not quite belong anywhere else. It is not ancient Malta, Baroque Malta or luxury Malta. It is Malta as film set, family memory and seaside oddity. And in a destination so rich in serious beauty, that little burst of nonsense by the bay has its own kind of value.
